JERUSALEM ROTARY FOUNDATION
The Jerusalem Rotary Foundation was formlly established in 1968. It awards scholarships to high school students of all religions from poor Jerusalem families, who are studying "hi-tech" subjects.
The students are selected from participating schools on the basis of their scholastic record and recommendations from their teachers.
The aim of the program is to encourage bright students to remain in schooland to resist the temptation of going into the job market before they further develop their knowledge and skills.
Over the past 34 years the Jerusalem Rotary Foundation has helped over 2,000 of the cities brightest youngsters from poor families to make their way in life and contribute to the community to which they belong.
Club members, through our Voluntary Travel Contribution (V.T.C.) are encouraged to make individual contributions upon return from trips abroad. There is also a commerating contribution of $500 USD to remember a family member or friend in a most dignified way at our Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremonies. The Donor receives a special plaque in acknowledgement of the gift.
ZAKA - EMERGENCY RESCUE AND RECOVERY
Zaka is a voluntary, humanitarian organisation that works alongside the police, military and emergency services at the scene of terror attacks. With a network of 600 volunteers in 105 cities across the country, Zaka is able to respond instantaneously – 24 hours a day – whenever and wherever an incident occurs. This means that they are often first on the scene, arriving within minutes of an attack.
JERUSALEM POST CHARITABLE FUND
The Jerusalem Post Charitable Fund was established in 1948 as a single project endeavor-toys for immigrant children. From its humble beginning it has flourished and now operates through the generous support of our readers and friends worldwide. There are now three separate Funds, which fulfill different basic functions:
THE FORSAKE ME NOT FUND
Donations help make the lives of our senior citizens a bit brighter. The Fund has provided for means for dignity and respect in their golden years, and ensures that they are neither forsaken nor forgotten. Their specific needs have been met through purchases of transport vehicles, provisions at clubhouses, community centers, or a host of specific requirements for the elderly.
THE TOY FUND
Donations help improve the quality of life for our children. Providing opportunities for summer camps, school supplies and even shoes, are a few of the needs that the funds have helped with.
THE WELCOME HOME FUND
Donations help new immigrants with their basic needs. Although the government supplies stipends to new immigrants, this allowance does not cover many of the essentials. Additionally, grants have been awarded annually to new immigrants as well as soldiers returning after years of compulsory service who wish to embark on higher education courses.
JERUSALEM INTERNATIONAL YMCA PEACE KINDERGARTEN "GAN SHALOM"
This unique preschool, located where the club has enjoyed its luncheon meetings for many years, is a a meeting place and educational center for children from Chrisitan, Muslim and Jewish homes. Here they are explosed to each other's cultures in a natural setting. The "Gan" [Hebrew for gardent] was founded in 1981 and has successfully continued since, emphasizing the common interests of both the children and their parents. Each class has two teachers, on teaching in Hebrew and other other in Arabic. The school engenders an atmosphere of tolerance and goodwill.
MELABEV - DAY CENTERS FOR THE IMPAIRED ELDERLY
Melabev is a leader in developing day care for the mentally frail elderly. The prevailing tendency in Israel is for the elderly to remain at home."Melabev's day-care centers were founded to provide a therapeutic and social framework and to enhance the quality of life of those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease or similar disorders."
This enables family members to continue their daily activities, knowing that their relatives are receiving excellent care in a supportive environment while enjoying stimulating activities like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, art, music, movement and dance therapies, and cooking.
NEVE SHALOM/WAHAT AL-SALAM
Located mid-way between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam is a community of 50 families, half Palestinian and half Jewish, all with Israeli citizenship. Democratically governed by an elected secretary general and secretariat (mayor & city council), the village's mission is to demonstrate that Jews and Palestinians can live together as equals. During even the most difficult times in Israel, the residents of the village are committed to this ideal. Through their various departments and educational projects, they reach out to the surrounding communities, involving all those who want to participate in lectures, workshops, and classes that further the work of peace among Palestinians and Jews. They reach beyond their borders with the message that "Peace is Possible."
SPAFFORD CHILDREN'S CENTER
The Spafford Children's Center has always been highly responsive to the needs of the families of Jerusalem and neighboring villages and provides a developing program of services. Its principal activity remains the comprehensive medical care of babies, children and mothers. The Spafford's Children Center is unique in offering an integrated and wide range of activities, including a medical centre, a psycho-social department, special education and diverse therapies for damaged and traumatised children.
THE ILAN GREEN ROOM
‘The Green Room’ is a mental health project aimed at teenagers who access help through the Internet. The project comes under the umbrella of Ilan, the mental health organisation, and is the brainchild of Dr. Roie Aldor and his devoted team. The interest for our club is that an allocation from club funds will enable the project to serve this neglected population for this coming year.
Dr. Aldor and his team, after thanking Rotary for its assistance, gave a fascinating presentation of the project to health care professionals at the Eitanim Psychiatric Hospital in the Judean Hills outside Jerusalem. The project aims to reach troubled teenagers who would not normally seek help but are prepared to contact The Green Room where their confidentiality and anonymity is respected. The e-mails that come in during the day are responded to promptly while those arriving at night are dealt with the following day. Where the problem only requires information or reassurance, it is dealt with on-line. If, on the other hand, it is more serious, advice is given on where help and support can be found.
Dr. Aldor and his team described several case studies. Moving examples of the kind of support and assistance that some teenagers desperately require. The Green Room ensures that their voices are heard and listened to. Our club should be proud to be connected to such a worthwhile endeavour.
VirTouch COMPUTER PROJECT FOR THE BLIND
Our club had a successful project using the VirTouch Mouse at two blind schools in Jerusalem. It was funded by a Rotary Children's Opportunities Grant (and PP David Seligman was a fingers-on volunteer for the project).
ARBITRATION PANEL
This initiative lead by P/P Avraham Cohen AND P/P Avraham Taubenhouse was designed to provide Rotarians as volunteer arbitrators that completed five cases in 1996. This service reduced the pressure on the courts and the delay of adjudication. The project was connected to the Magistrates Court/Small Claims Court.
JERUSALEM ROTARY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year the interest from the Club's Foundation is used for scholarship awards to worthy high schools students in Jerusalem.
In 1996 40 Scholarships were awarded of 1,000 NIS each
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE
In May 1996 we received a GSE from Virginia and the Philippines.
MEDICINAL GARDEN
In 1996 a joint project wiht our club and the Jerusalem Central Club as approved to set up a medicinal garden.
MERKAZ (GAN) HARMONY ASSISTANCE PROJECT
A matching grant initially conceived in 1996 was initiated by P/P Alex Falcon who secured the help of three Rotary Clubs in Italy and one in the U.K.. the project was designed to help an East Jerusalem school to mainstream children with special needs into the regular school system. $25,000 USD was needed for the project. Gan Harmony had agreed to donate $10,000 USD and the Rotary target was $15,000 USD. Rotary Clubs in Rome and Nazareth had pledged support and 1,400 Pounds Sterling was received by a club in England. Avraham Cohen received a pledge ofg $20,000 USD from an organization he was associated with.
ENGLISH CONVERSATION
A hands on project to help Ethiopian new immigrants in English conversation. Members were asked to donate 1 1/2 hours per week as volunteers. (1998)
YAD SARAH MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
In 1985 our Club was the recipient of 5 containers of medical equipment we donted to Yad Sarah for the handicapped from a Rotary Club in Sweden. The equipment included wheel chairs, walkers and related aides.
Yad Sarah is an Israel-wide network of volunteers aiding sick, disabled, elderly, isolated and housebound people with an array of services aimed at making home care possible. Yad Sarah helps everybody, without discrimination, without bureaucracy, without charge – but with a warm smile and attentive ear.
VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD
Each year the Club honors an outstanding non-member who has contributed to his/her fellow citizens' welfare by exceptional servce to the community. Nominations are invited from members for this award, which carries with it a certificate and a donation of 500 NIS to a charity of the recipient's choice.
RIZEK ABUSHARR ENDOWMENT FUND
Upon the retirment of our Past President as Executive Director of the jerusalem International YMCA, the YMCA set up an endowment fund in his name to promote programs bringing together youth in the quest for tolerance and democratic values. Contributions have exceeded $100,000 USD.
